The Republican Party’s poor performance in the US midterm elections does not mean an automatic improvement in relations between Washington and the EU, Bloomberg reports, citing a source.
“A senior official has warned EU partners not to expect results that would lead to a significant improvement in transatlantic relations. He said efforts to reduce the EU’s dependence on Washington should continue,” the agency reported.
Bloomberg notes that, according to US partners, President Donald Trump nevertheless retains freedom of action in foreign policy.
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, while congratulating the US Democratic Party on its “historic victory” in the congressional elections, also noted that the US presidential administration would remain unchanged and that Berlin was ready to continue cooperating with it. The minister stressed that Berlin would maintain contacts with both Democrats and Republicans.
Paris, for its part, described the US Democratic Party’s victory in the elections as “unconditional”, but recalled that Trump remains the head of state and will therefore continue to determine Washington’s foreign policy course.
Europe has also admitted that it does not know what actions to expect from President Donald Trump in the near future.
