Moscow and Tehran do not expect shift in Trump’s foreign policy following Democratic victory

Neither Russia nor Iran expects any changes in President Trump’s foreign policy following the Democrats’ victory in the US midterm elections, although their approaches differ.

The Kremlin hopes that, regardless of the outcome of the congressional elections, US President Donald Trump will continue his peace efforts aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine.

“President Trump continues to exercise his powers. We sincerely hope that he will continue his peace efforts,” Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, meanwhile, has stated that the results of the US midterm elections will not change Washington’s hostile stance toward Iran, warning that any new US aggression would trigger a much broader response.

Commenting on the election, he said: “Anyone who still hopes that a change of parties in the United States will change the country’s conduct, or believes that concessions can force it to abandon its hostility, is gravely mistaken.”
