Human Rights Defender's institution must possess institutional safeguards necessary for full exercise of its mandate: Manasyan met with EU representatives

The Human Rights Defender’s Office must have the necessary institutional guarantees for the full and effective implementation of its mandate: Ms. Anahit Manasyan met with representatives of the European Commission.

On September 22, within the framework of her working visit to Brussels, the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia, Ms. Anahit Manasyan met with representatives of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for EU Enlargement and Eastern Neighbourhood (DG ENEST).

During the meeting, issues related to human rights protection in Armenia, guarantees for the independence and institutional strengthening of the Human Rights Defender’s Office, as well as the work carried out in the field of human rights protection within the framework of Armenia-EU cooperation were discussed.

Ms. Anahit Manasyan emphasized that the independence of the Human Rights Defender’s Office must be guaranteed not only by legislation, but also in practice. In this context, the Human Rights Defender emphasized the importance of ensuring the necessary institutional guarantees for the full and effective implementation of the institution’s mandate.

Reference was also made to the effective implementation of European human rights standards and opportunities for further developing Armenia-EU cooperation in this direction.
