Kazakhstan expects to complete its Balkhash and Moyinkum nuclear power plant projects by 2035, Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov told a government briefing.
"The first nuclear power plant, Balkhash, as you know, will be developed with the Russian Rosatom consortium. For the second plant, Moyinkum, discussions are currently under way with China National Nuclear Corporation. The terms of the deal, including the timetable, are still being discussed. But we believe the projects should be completed by 2035," he said.
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev previously proposed starting construction of the Balkhash nuclear power plant as early as next year and concluding an agreement to allow construction of the Moyinkum plant to begin as soon as possible.
Earlier reports said Kazakhstan planned to establish a state strategic uranium reserve by the end of 2027 to meet the needs of its own nuclear power plants.
