Hollywood actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio has highlighted Armenia’s role in a global initiative aimed at accelerating the recovery of endangered species, in an Instagram post about announcements made at the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP17) in Yerevan.
DiCaprio noted that 17 countries, led by Armenia and Colombia, have joined the newly established Coalition of Action to Recover Endangered Species (CARES), committing to accelerate efforts to prevent extinctions and achieve measurable progress in species recovery.
“Preventing extinction isn’t enough. We need to bring threatened species back from the brink and recover them,” DiCaprio wrote, describing the announcements as a sign of growing global momentum toward species recovery.
The actor also highlighted the establishment of the Species Recovery Alliance, a separate initiative formed by nine philanthropic funders and organizations, including Re, the conservation organization with which he is affiliated.
The alliance has committed to align more than $500 million over five years to support the recovery of species classified as Extinct in the Wild, Critically Endangered and Endangered.
Although the two initiatives are separate, they share a common goal of helping the world’s most threatened species recover through sustained investment, coordinated conservation efforts and long-term commitment.
DiCaprio congratulated the founding governments and organizations involved in the initiatives.
Armenia is hosting COP17, bringing together representatives of governments, international organizations and conservation groups to advance global efforts to protect biodiversity and address the growing threat of species extinction.
