About 30 French political figures, including Anne Hidalgo, denounce France's presence in Baku for COP29: Le Figaro

About 30 French politicians, including Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, along with a group of deputies and senators, signed a petition condemning participation in the COP29 conference in Baku, set to begin on November 11, Le Figaro reports.

"We, the signatories of this petition, urge the government to take decisive and symbolic action in boycotting COP29," the article states.

It is noted that holding this conference, "which many parliamentarians deem a 'shame,' should not support the autocratic and corrupt regime of Azerbaijan, nor its expansionist and destabilizing objectives."

"This is evidenced by the position of Ilham Aliyev, who, after violating all the conditions of the November 9, 2020 ceasefire agreement one by one, and initiating ethnic cleansing in Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2023, continues to escalate demands for a peace agreement," the article emphasizes.

The article raises the question of whether it is possible to seriously discuss ecology while remaining deaf to the cries of all the political prisoners held and tortured just a few hundred meters from the conference venue.

"The signatories of this appeal do not accept this. On the contrary, they urge the government to send a strong signal to the Aliyev regime by boycotting COP29 and leading an international campaign demanding the immediate and unconditional release of Armenian hostages, the right of 120,000 refugees to safely return to Nagorno-Karabakh in compliance with the International Court of Justice ruling, and respect for Armenia's territorial integrity, over 200 square kilometers of which are occupied (by Azerbaijan - ed.)," the article notes.
