Russian Railways is exploring the possibility of transporting vegetables from Turkey and Azerbaijan to Russia via transit through Georgia. This potential new route was announced by Vadim Mikhailov, First Deputy General Director of Russian Railways.
Utilizing this route would require the restoration of railway traffic through Abkhazia—a connection that has been completely severed since the conflict in the 1990s. The issue of reactivating the Abkhazian section of the railway is periodically raised by Russian officials, but it consistently encounters a firm stance from Tbilisi.
