Relations between Türkiye and Azerbaijan have become strained recently. Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry has declared 31 Turkish citizens “persona non grata” and banned them from entering the country. According to the ministry, the reason was statements made by these individuals on social media that were directed “against Azerbaijan’s sovereignty, national security and Azerbaijanis, and also contained calls for the violent overthrow of the government and the incitement of religious hatred.” The list of those declared “persona non grata” includes bloggers, journalists, political analysts, public and religious figures, as well as Turkish lawmakers.
In recent days, Baku has also issued international wanted notices for seven Turkish citizens living and operating in Türkiye, accusing them of making public calls against Baku. An enhanced security regime has also been introduced at the premises of Azerbaijan’s Consulate General in Istanbul following protests held outside the building.
Tensions have escalated particularly following demonstrations in Azerbaijan against new school uniform requirements, after female students wearing hijabs were barred from attending classes at some schools in Baku. The Turkish president’s chief adviser described restrictions on the right to education of female students wearing headscarves as unacceptable. Participants in demonstrations in Türkiye condemned Baku’s actions, as well as its close ties with Israel. The New Azerbaijan Party called on the Turkish side not to interfere in the country’s internal affairs. Baku has also stated that a large-scale hybrid attack is being carried out against the republic from the territory of friendly and neighboring countries.
