Iran welcomes all diplomatic efforts but remains fully prepared to defend itself, Kazem Gharibabadi, Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, said, stressing that any negotiations must be based on realistic proposals, IRNA reported.
Speaking to Al Araby television network, Gharibabadi said Tehran was finalizing its response to the US side’s comments and concerns regarding Iran’s proposal submitted in New York.
He said Iran would communicate its final position through mediators after completing consultations, adding that the country remained ready for diplomacy provided the proposals put forward were realistic.
Gharibabadi said Iran had consistently welcomed diplomatic initiatives and spared no effort to pursue dialogue with any party.
The official stressed that Iran’s readiness to defend itself and fight was no less than its preparedness to negotiate.
The deputy foreign minister said Tehran’s continued participation in talks demonstrated its political flexibility and commitment to the diplomatic process. He added that Washington, too, must fulfill its commitments.
Gharibabadi emphasized that Iran had violated none of its obligations, while the United States had failed to honor its commitments under the Islamabad memorandum of understanding and should take remedial steps.
He said Iran should not be expected to show further flexibility while the US continued to disregard all its commitments.
