We will not cooperate with Georgian authorities until they begin moving towards European values: Marta Kos

The European Union (EU) is very keen to restore cooperation with the Georgian authorities, but for this they need to take certain actions, stated the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos.

According to her, instead of moving forward, the Georgian authorities are taking steps backwards, passing numerous respective laws.

“As long as there is no progress and they [i.e. the Georgian authorities] do not take steps towards European values, we will not cooperate with them,” the EU official added.

Kos noted that, despite the lack of cooperation with the Georgian authorities, the EU continues to interact with Georgian civil society and support the Georgian people.

A meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council will be held in Luxembourg Monday. The situation in Georgia is also on the agenda.

On November 28, 2024, the Georgian government announced that it would not put the matter of EU membership talks on the agenda until the end of 2028. Tensions remain high between Tbilisi and Brussels after this decision, with Georgian authorities accusing the European bureaucracy of stalling the European integration process.
