Signage removed from Britain's consulate in East Jerusalem as Israeli shutdown order expires

Reuters. Workers removed signage from the British Consulate in East Jerusalem overnight, after an Israeli order to shut the mission expired on Thursday (October 8).

The British flag was still flying above the compound on Thursday morning, but plaques and signs identifying the consulate on its facade were taken down.

Israel ordered the closure last month following Britain's decision to impose sanctions on Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

The dispute marks a further deterioration in ties between the allies, with the consulate long serving as Britain's diplomatic mission to Palestinians in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza.
