On September 21, Republic of Armenia marks 35th anniversary of independence

On September 21, Armenians around the world celebrate the Independence Day of the Republic of Armenia. The Declaration of Independence of Armenia was adopted on August 23, 1990, at a session of the Supreme Council.

35 years ago, on September 21, 1991, a referendum on seceding from the Soviet Union was held in Armenia. Of the 2,056,758 citizens eligible to vote, 94.39% voted “yes” for independence. On September 23, the Supreme Council of the Republic of Armenia, summarizing the results of the referendum, declared the Republic of Armenia an independent state.
