UN International Court of Justice grants Armenia’s first and third preliminary objections and dismisses second one in the Azerbaijan vs. Armenia case

The Hague Court (UN International Court of Justice) has granted Armenia’s first and third preliminary objections and dismissed the second one in the Azerbaijan v. Armenia case. 

Armenia had submitted three preliminary objections:

1. Armenia argued the Court lacks temporal jurisdiction for Azerbaijani complaints related to events from July 1993 to September 15, 1996, a period when Armenia was a party to the Convention while Azerbaijan was not.
2. The Court lacks substantive jurisdiction over alleged mine placements by Armenia, suggesting these claims do not inherently constitute norm violations.
3. The Court lacks jurisdiction on Azerbaijan's environmental complaints under the Convention.
