Reuters. Amid the rubble of a mosque that once stood in Mandalay, a survivor on Wednesday (April 2) recalled exactly where he was when the deadly earthquake struck last week, shaking Myanmar to its core and killing thousands.
The survivor, who declined to be named due to security concerns, told Reuters about the moment when disaster struck. “I would say I was lucky that nothing major happened to me. I realised that I could have died if I ran away because many people died at the mosque when they ran in chaos and panic,” he said.
The survivor recounted buildings collapsing over an alley in the mosque, estimating “about 20 people died at one spot”.
Last Friday's (March 28) 7.7-magnitude quake, one of Myanmar's strongest in a century, jolted a region home to 28 million, toppling buildings such as hospitals, flattening communities and leaving many without food, water and shelter. Deaths rose to 3,085 on Thursday, with 4,715 injured and 341 missing, the ruling junta said.
