Lawmakers at the Armenian parliament’s EU integration affairs committee on Monday debated and approved the EU bill ahead of the second reading.
The preamble of the bill was amended after the first reading, the committee chair Arman Yeghoyan said.
The original version’s preamble contained a segment which said “the Republic of Armenia, expressing the unified will of the people of the Republic of Armenia...”
This segment has been removed. The amended version of the bill says “The Republic of Armenia, seeking to develop democratic institutions, increase the welfare of the society, strengthen the country’s security, resilience and rule of law, is announcing the launch of the process of the accession of the Republic of Armenia into the European Union.”
The second reading will be held at the upcoming plenary session. The bill was initiated by several civic organizations through a petition which garnered enough votes to be considered as a bill.
The Armenian parliament on February 12 adopted the bill at first reading. The second and final reading was postponed afterwards for technical reasons.
