European officials say the Trump administration has pared back its engagement with efforts to enforce sanctions on Russia as the US pushes for an end to the war in Ukraine,
Bloomberg reports.
The US has been largely absent from several working groups set up by allies to crack down on attempts to get around sanctions imposed on the Kremlin, the officials said, asking not to be named discussing private work.
The United States has reduced its participation in joint groups with allies that monitor compliance with the sanctions regime against Russia and counter Moscow's attempts to circumvent restrictions, including the maintenance of the upper limit on oil prices set by the G7 countries.
Earlier, the US President's special envoy Steven Witkoff stated that the US may begin the process of easing sanctions against Russia after an agreement is reached on a peaceful settlement in Ukraine. At the same time, US President Donald Trump spoke about the possibility of tightening the sanctions regime against Russia if the negotiation process fails.
The sources also noted that there are no signs of preparations by the US to tighten sanctions against Russia, while at the same time reporting that they will remain in force as long as the conflict in Ukraine continues.
