Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk commented on the positive conclusion of the Armenian Government on the draft law on the start of Armenia’s accession process to the European Union. According to him, Russia sees this discussion as the beginning of Armenia’s exit from the EAEU.
Overchuk noted that the EAEU and the EU are incompatible, so Armenia will face a choice.
"In case of winding down relations with the EEU in Armenia, on the one hand, energy and food prices will rise, and on the other hand, exports of Armenian goods will shrink by 70-80 per cent. Thus, ordinary people will lose their incomes, jobs and will pay more for basic necessities. In return, they are likely to get a visa-free travel to EU and Armenia will get depopulation,” the Russian Deputy Prime Minister said.
He added that membership in the EAEU is a privilege, and compared membership in the European Union to “buying a ticket to the Titanic.”
Overchuk noted that the Russian Federation will build its economic policy towards Armenia, taking into account the process underway in the Republic.
The Russian official, at the same time, said that this is the sovereign choice of the Republic of Armenia.
