Russian border guards have been temporarily deployed at Zvartnots Airport, as well as on Armenia's border with Turkey and Iran. They have essentially provided their services to Armenia until the Republic of Armenia is able to form all the necessary institutions and skills to provide the service of that mission on its own. Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan stated this during a press conference summarizing the work of 2024, responding to the question of whether there is an initiative to reduce the presence of Russian border guards on the Armenian-Turkish border, as well as to review and amend the agreement on the Russian base.
"Now we have expressed our gratitude to the Russian border service at some point, and I must say that we can now take care of this issue independently at Zvartnots International Airport.
Then, at some stage, we assumed full control over the checkpoint operating between Armenia and Iran. This speaks, on the one hand, of the formation of our capabilities, and on the other hand, I repeat, of the high level of trust between the two countries, in this case, Armenia and Iran.
Now you are asking about future plans. I can say that if, for example, there is a functioning open border between Armenia and Turkey, if there is that same trust between Armenia and Turkey, then we can discuss and consider that issue as well.
You also asked about the military base, I want to say that at least there is no such issue on the agenda at the moment, the issue of the military base,” he said.
