Syria's Damascus airport will start operating international flights from Jan. 7, Syrian Civil Aviation Authority chief Ashad Al Saliby told Syrian state news agency Sana on Saturday (January 4), Reuters reports.
Employees were seen by Reuters preparing Damascus International Airport on December 14 to resume operations after the airport had been closed on December 8, following the fighting to oust Syria's President Bashar al-Assad.
Damascus Airport director Anis Fallouh had told Reuters that flights will be allowed to land and depart "soon", after use of the airspace was only permitted for the passage of aircraft since December 12.
Prior to the toppling of Assad's regime, there were limited international flights operated by Iran's Meraj Airlines and Syrian airline Cham Wings.
