Western countries are attempting to draw Armenia into their sphere of influence and destabilize the situation in Georgia. This was stated by the chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Valery Gerasimov, at a briefing for the military attachés of foreign countries.
According to him, these attempts show an interest in engaging the country in active anti-Russian actions like in the Ukrainian scenario.
"The situation in Transcaucasia continues to be dire. The desire of extra-regional players first of all, the US and the European Union to strengthen their positions in the region, to keep Georgia, and to draw Armenia into their sphere of influence, has a destructive effect on its development," Gerasimov noted.
The chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces added that amid this dire situation in the Caucasus, Russia, on the other hand, is taking constructive steps in this region, and largely thanks to these efforts, Armenia and Azerbaijan are successfully moving towards the normalization of bilateral relations.
