Syria’s armed opposition has said that it guarantees security of foreign diplomatic mission in Damascus after it came over under its control, diplomatic sources in two Arab countries told TASS.
"The opposition leaders have guaranteed security of foreign diplomatic mission. Embassies continue to enjoy inviolability but the situation in Syria is changing rapidly. It is hard to predict further developments," one of the sources said.
A spokesman for the Russian embassy in Damascus told TASS earlier that Russian diplomats were remaining in the Syrian capital city. "Everything is all right," the spokesman said.
Syria’s armed opposition units launched a large-scale offensive on government troops in the Aleppo and Idlib governorates on November 27. By December 7, Syrian President Bashar Assad’s opponents had seized several large cities, including Aleppo, Hama, Deir ez-Zor, Daraa, and Homs. On Sunday morning, they entered Damascus and government troops withdrew from the city. Following intra-Syrian talks, President Assad stepped down and fled the country.
