French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday (December 8) welcomed news of the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and said France will remain committed to the security of all in the Middle East, Reuters reports.
"The barbaric state has fallen. At last. I pay tribute to the Syrian people, to their courage, to their patience. In this moment of uncertainty, I wish them peace, freedom and unity," Macron said in a post on X social media.
France's foreign ministry also welcomed news of Assad's fall and called for fighting to end and a peaceful political transition in the country.
"Now is the time for unity in Syria," the statement read.
Following the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Germany's Olaf Scholz on Sunday (December 8) said he stood with the Syrians hoping for a free and peaceful future and said Germany would offer its support.
A comprehensive national dialogue, an orderly and peaceful transition process and ultimately a political solution to the conflict in Syria were possible, the German chancellor said in Berlin on Sunday evening.
“Together with international partners and on the basis of the United Nations Security Council resolution, Germany will make its contribution to this.” Scholz said without giving any details.
Assad had “brutally and violently oppressed” his own people for more than a decade, had thousands of lives on his conscience and had driven millions of people to flee, Scholz said.
