U.S. Senators Edward J. Markey and Sheldon Whitehouse have expressed support to Armenia and the right to return of Nagorno-Karabakh Armenians during a press conference within the framework of COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Senator Markey called for Azerbaijan's release of political prisoners and asserted the right of return of Nagorno-Karabakh's Armenians who were forcibly displaced in 2023.
“We believe that the political prisoners should be released. We believe there should be a right to return of the Armenians to Nagorno-Karabakh,” Markey said.
Senator Sheldon Whitehouse expressed support to Armenia.
“Senator Markey and I support Armenia, both of us. We are very regretful that the dislocation of so many Armenians has taken place. To put it mildly, I am far from convinced that Armenians are to blame for that. And I don’t want to dwell in the home of my hosts on human rights issues, but if that were to be the topic, I would not be very complimentary,” Senator Whitehouse said.
