Reuters. Residents of the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai gathered on Tuesday (November 12) night to pay tribute to the victims of a deadly hit-and-run attack.
The incident happened at 7:48 p.m. (1148 GMT) on Monday (November 11), when a small off-road vehicle was driven into a large group of people exercising outside the sports center, resulting in 35 people being killed and 43 severely injured, according to local police.
Around 30 people assembled around the west gate of the sports centre where the attack took place, lighting candles and incense and laying down floral tributes.
Zhuhai police said in a statement that the suspect, a 62-year-old man surnamed Fan, is currently being treated at a hospital for severe neck injuries caused by stabbing himself with a knife in his car. Their preliminary investigation suggests that the incident was triggered by Fan's dissatisfaction following a divorce.
President Xi Jinping, quoted by Chinese state television CCTV, ordered all-out efforts to treat the injured and demanded severe punishment for the perpetrator. The central government has dispatched a team to provide guidance on the handling of the case, as reported by CCTV.
