A discussion was held in the European Parliament on the topic "Political situation and human rights issues in Azerbaijan". The vote on the resolution will take place on Thursday.
Vice-President of the European Commission on Labor and Social Affairs, Nicholas Schmitt, noted that human rights are being threatened in Azerbaijan day by day, and free speech is being suppressed even more. At the same time, he noted that Yerevan and Baku are closer than ever to establishing peace, and the European Union fully supports the ongoing peace process between the two countries.
French MP Xavier Bellamy condemned Azerbaijan's attack on Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia, stated that Ilham Aliyev is trying to interfere in the internal affairs of the European Union and France, to destabilize the situation in New Caledonia. He proposed immediate sanctions against the President and officials of Azerbaijan.
According to another French MP, Jordan Bardela, the European Union, with the support of Turkish President Recep Erdogan, buys gas from Azerbaijan.
Natalie Loizeau called the attack against Nagorno-Karabakh ethnic cleansing and called for a boycott of the COP-29 conference to be held in Baku.
The MPs insisted that the EU should demand from Azerbaijan to respect human rights, preserve the Armenian cultural heritage and ensure the rights of forcibly displaced Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh.
They also informed that in the resolution to be voted on Thursday, they fully support the initiative of Armenia's rapprochement with the EU and condemn Ilham Aliyev's policy in the region.
