Ukraine hit a military explosives manufacturer deep inside Russian territory overnight, as well as storage infrastructure at a military airport in the Lipetsk region, the Kyiv General Staff announced on Sunday, October 20.
Russia's air defenses have shot down 110 Ukrainian drones across the country, the Russian Defense Ministry said, including one over the Moscow region, 43 over the Kursk border region, and 27 over the southwestern Lipetsk region.
Russian Telegram channel SHOT reported that the drones targeted the state-owned Sverdlov Plant in Dzerzhinsk, about 400 kilometers east of Moscow.
It is an explosives factory, one of the largest used by Russian forces in the war that Russia launched against Ukraine in February 2022, and which is under the sanctions of the United States of America (USA) and the European Union (EU).
The General Staff stated that it is still assessing the damage caused by the attack.
Four firefighters were slightly injured by shrapnel in an attack in an industrial zone in Dzerzhinsk, the regional governor said, without specifying the target of the attack.
The Russian Ministry of Defense said on Telegram that eight Ukrainian drones were destroyed over Nizhny Novgorod.
The SHOT channel reports that locals reported loud explosions and white smoke in the area above the factory.
Reuters could not independently confirm the reports.
The mayor of Moscow, Sergey Sobyanin, said on Telegram that debris fell on Moscow's Ramensky district, but that there was no damage or casualties.
Kyiv often points out that its airstrikes target key infrastructure for Russia's war effort, and that they are in response to Moscow's incessant airstrikes across Ukraine.
Russian officials often do not disclose the full extent of damage caused by drone strikes, especially when it comes to military, transportation or energy infrastructure.
