Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, yesterday called Israel’s shelling of UN peacekeeping forces in southern Lebanon “unacceptable and unjustified”.
In a post on
X, Borrell said: “Another line has been dangerously crossed in Lebanon: IDF shelling of UN peacekeepers whose positions are known.”
He condemned the attack, stressing that “there is no justification for such actions.”
The EU’s top diplomat further affirmed the EU’s full support for UNIFIL and its mission, which operates under a mandate issued to it by the UN Security Council.
Earlier yesterday, UNIFIL released a statement saying that the Israeli occupation army repeatedly shelled its headquarters in Naqoura and nearby positions, reminding Israel of its obligation to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property and to respect the sanctity of its premises.
“Any deliberate attack on peacekeepers is a grave violation of international humanitarian law and of Security Council resolution 1701.,” the UNIFIL statement added.
