We had the opportunity to discuss recent developments in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Cyprus Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas said during a joint statement with Armenia’s Defense Minister Suren Papikyan.
“The Eastern Mediterranean is a region full of geopolitical upheavals. Unilateral actions that violate international law and sovereign rights actually worsen the situation in the region and undermine peace and stability in the region,” he said.
“Cyprus firmly supports the peaceful settlement of all disputes based on the principles of international law and on the basis of the principle of good-neighborly relations. We believe that dialogue and relationships of mutual trust are important tools to establish lasting peace and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Cyprus, as a pillar of stability, is committed to further strengthening peace and stability in the region, while today I had the opportunity to analyze Cyprus' contribution to the evacuation of civilians, as well as to the creation of a safe maritime corridor for the delivery of humanitarian aid by sea to Gaza,” said Cyprus’ Defense Minister.
Palmas also referred to the Cyprus issue and noted: “I want to once again repeat our gratitude and thank Armenia for its support in all international and regional organizations to settle the Cyprus issue on the basis of UN Security Council resolutions. In this framework, I had the opportunity to inform about the security situation that prevails in Cyprus today and the efforts of Turkey, which is trying to use illegal immigration as a tool of pressure.
In recent years, Turkey has an aggressive rhetoric, threatening the actual stability and security in Cyprus and the entire region in the Eastern Mediterranean," the Minister said.
“The Republic of Cyprus will continue its foreign policy transparently and openly with even closer and multilateral cooperation, both bilaterally and multilaterally, always respecting international law and the UN Charter, the Law of the Sea.”
