A large section of Dresden's Carola Bridge (Carolabruecke) collapsed into the River Elbe early on Wednesday morning (September 11), Reuters reports.
The bridge which is used by pedestrians, cyclists and runs an hourly tram service was empty at the time.
According to the fire brigade, a section around 100-metres long has fallen into the Elbe and is blocking the river channel.
According to the city of Dresden authorities other parts of the bridge are in acute danger of collapsing.
According to initial reports, no people were injured by the collapse. It is still unclear what caused the collapse.
The entire area around the Carola Bridge will remain completely closed until further notice, it said. Road users must expect considerable obstructions.
Emergency services said the situation and the next steps are currently being investigated.
