Armenia will participate in the BRICS summit to be held in Kazan in October, Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia Mnatsakan Safaryan said at a briefing with journalists in the National Assembly.
“Yes, we will participate,” he said when asked whether Armenia will participate in the summit.
Armenia is not a member of the organization, but it has been invited to the event along with fellow members of the CIS.
BRICS countries account for 34% of the Earth's territory and 45.2% of the population. GDP in terms of purchasing power made up 36.7% of the world value.
BRICS, originally formed in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, aims to bring together the world’s most important emerging economies, as well as act as a political and economic counterbalance to wealthier nations in the West.
The group of countries expanded earlier this year to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. Saudi Arabia was invited to join, though the Kingdom is yet to do that.
The group’s further enlargement could be discussed during the summit in Kazan, Russia, from October 22-24, said the people. Malaysia, Thailand and Azerbaijan are among other countries looking to join.
Bloomberg reported earlier this week that Turkey has formally asked to join BRICS.
