The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell reiterated EU’s “extreme” and “increasing” concern about Georgia’s trajectory, in his remarks made during the press conference following the informal meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers on August 29, 2024 in Brussels, Civil Georgia reports.
“We briefly discussed the situation in Georgia. We are extremely, increasingly concerned about the trajectory of this country moving away from the European Union,” stressed Josep Borrell.
The ruling party of Georgia 'Georgian Dream' commented on Borrell's statements, calling them a "threat". The deputy speaker of the parliament, Gia Volsky, accused Borrell of providing wrong information to the European and Georgian society.
Earlier, the EU announced that it had suspended the process of Georgia's accession to the Union in response to the adoption of the 'Transparency of Foreign Influence' law and other actions of the Georgian authorities. Brussels also decided to reduce political contacts with the Georgian authorities and began to review the financial aid provided to the government.
