The protocol on handing over to the Armenian side the protection of Armenia’s state border at Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan was signed today at the airport.
The protocol was signed by the commander of the Border Guard Troops of Armenia, Edgar Hunanyan, and the head of the Russian Border Guard Department in Armenia, Roman Golubitsky.
The protocol states that "the Armenian side thanks the Russian side for the long-term joint service to ensure border control at the Zvartnots air crossing, and notes that it does not have any demands on the Russian side."
As of Thursday, there will no longer be Russian border guards at Zvartnots airport.
The initiative is from the Armenian side. On March 6, Armenia had sent an official letter to Russia regarding the termination of the activities of Russian border guards at Zvartnots airport
"The matter is of a working nature, not political or geopolitical," Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had told reporters on March 12 in this regard.
The interstate agreement on the status of the Russian border guard troops stationed in Armenia and the conditions of their activities was signed back on September 30, 1992 in Yerevan.
