In an interview with the Iranian SNN agency, the Ambassador of Iran to Armenia spoke about the relations between Armenia and the Islamic Republic. Mehdi Sobhani emphasized that Armenia is a direct neighbor of Iran, and although the border between the two countries is the shortest, it is the most reliable and is called the 'border of hope'.
"We have always had good relations with Armenians and Armenia, and they are only getting stronger," the Ambassador noted. He expressed satisfaction that an agreement on the construction of the Agarak-Kajaran road was signed between the countries. Sobhani also noted that a number of small and large projects worth $36 million have been completed. He cited the development of the Meghri customs house as an example.
"Armenia-Iran official trade has increased from $200 million to $700 million. Last summer, the gas and electricity exchange agreement was extended until 2030. The third power transmission line between Iran and Armenia will be ready soon. The export of gas from Iran to Armenia will double," the Ambassador explained.
According to him, the problem of lack of electricity in the northern regions of Iran will be solved with the import of electricity from Armenia. "The southern region of Armenia is a strategic region whose security is connected with Iran," Mehdi Sobhani added.
He referred to the peace agenda in the region, noted that Tehran supports the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and Armenia, the ongoing negotiations between the countries, opposes the change of international borders and any geopolitical changes in the region.
"The issues of the region should be solved internally, because the consequences will be felt by the countries of the region, not the extra-regional countries like the USA," the official stressed.
