The United States considers the South Caucasus exclusively as a springboard for various actions against Russia and against peaceful coexistence of the countries and peoples there. This was stated today, July 18, at a weekly briefing by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova.
"They are not satisfied with Russia with its capabilities there. And why are they not satisfied? Yes, because it again pursues a peace-loving policy. And they are not satisfied with the peace-loving policy itself in general in principle,” she said.
According to the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, achieving peace and stability in the region,
“which is possible only with the comprehensive normalization of relations between the countries of the Caucasus with the involvement of their immediate neighbors - Iran, Turkey, and Russia - is not part of Washington's goals and objectives.”
"Not only that - they set this as their anti-target. The goal is to make sure that no interaction, rapprochement, or mutual understanding in the region is achieved. An illustrative example of this policy (there is hypocrisy, double standards, and just outright aggression of the US and EU) is their pressure on Tbilisi in connection with the adoption of the law on transparency of foreign influence. I will just remind you that similar laws are already in force in the US and EU countries. And in the same weeks and months exactly the same law was adopted in Canada. But neither the U.S. nor the EU had any claims to Canada, while the U.S. and collective Brussels humiliated Georgia and Georgian people literally every day for a month,” Zakharova said.
She stressed that in the United States itself and in a number of other countries, “these same norms are invoked in far more brutal and severe forms.”
"Well, among other things, we see American attempts to inflame the situation in Georgia in the context of the parliamentary elections scheduled for October. And all this applies not only to Georgia, but also to Azerbaijan and Armenia. We are witnessing how American officials have reached Yerevan in a literally endless string. What is this? It is an illusion that they care about the welfare of this country and its people. In reality, the post-Soviet countries are drawn into anti-Russian campaigns and anti-Russian schemes. This harms not so much us as these states themselves - their economic activity, humanitarian policy, and specific people in huge numbers. We expect that our partners in the South Caucasus understand what such pseudo-friendship with the West is worth, or should I say, what it will cost them. The West does not know how to be friends. It can only use. And, unfortunately, in this kind of relationship, it is not interested in the feelings of the partner,” concluded the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
