The volume of Russian gas supplies to Iran under the recently signed memorandum should total 300 million cubic meters per day, 109 billion cubic meters per year, Iran's Shana and Irna press agencies said, citing Oil Minister Javad Owji, Interfax reports.
Owji said that the agreement envisages "a large volume of Russian gas supplied to Iran for domestic consumption and for neighboring countries," with Russia taking on the costs of building the gas pipeline.
The minister said that the document is "a masterpiece of energy diplomacy that could create the preconditions for an economic revolution and ensure energy security for the region with the help of Iran."
Owji also said that this involves the construction of a gas pipeline from the north to the south of Iran.
As reported, Gazprom on June 26 signed a strategic memorandum with the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) on developing the organization of Russian gas supplies to Iran. Gazprom said that it signed the document with NIGC in the presence of Iran's acting president, Mohammad Mokhber.
