The Popular Front Party (PFP) will boycott the snap parliamentary elections to be held on 1 September. This decision was made by the party's Supreme Majlis on 13 July.
“More than 300 political prisoners in the country have still not been released, freedom of assembly is prohibited, election commissions are under the full control of the government, it is impossible to control the voting and counting process, the free press has been destroyed.
No independent observers are allowed to observe the elections and there is no free competition in the elections. For these reasons, the extraordinary elections to Milli Majlis, scheduled for 1 September 2024, should be boycotted," the Milli Majlis decision reads.
The assembly also decided to call an extraordinary congress of the PFP within three months. Party leader Ali Kerimli said the new law "On Political Parties" gives the government additional powers to interfere in the affairs of political parties.
"The leadership of the Ministry of Justice has sent a letter to the PFP urging it to bring the party's charter in line with the requirements of the law "On Political Parties."
In order not to give the government an excuse to say that the party is violating the law on political parties, the Majlis decided to convene an extraordinary congress and adopt a new party charter, Kerimli said.
According to the Central Electoral Commission, 401 candidates have already been registered.
