The European perspective for Georgia will be canceled if the authorities of this country continue their current policies, according to the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell.
"Now the EU’s doors are open for Georgia. But if the government continues its current actions, these doors will close" he said.
According to him, the Georgian people will suffer from the European perspective diminishing or even being canceled.
Borrell reported that the issue of measures against Georgia will be discussed during today's meeting of the EU foreign ministers. "We are talking about serious matters," he said.
Earlier, Euractiv reported that the EU is preparing sanctions against Georgia, including reductions in financial aid and visa restrictions due to the enacted foreign agents law. The law, targeting civil society institutions, was passed despite protests in Tbilisi.
The Council of the European Union granted Georgia official candidate status for EU membership in December 2023.
