The age for marriage by the RA legislation in force is at 18. The person can also marry at the ages of 16 and 17 with some exceptions.
The deputy Rustam Bakoyan proposes with new legislative regulation to set the minimum age for marriage at 18 without exceptions, remove all the regulations, which refer to early marriages and minor spouses.
The deputy Rustam Bakoyan presented for debate the legislative package stipulating amendments to Family and Civil Codes at the sitting of the NA Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs.
The key rapporteur noted that the problem was attached importance to in parliament still in the seventh convocation, studies were held, debates and parliamentary hearings were organized will all concerned sides.
The Committee Chair Vladimir Vardanyan expressed conviction that the legislative proposal is a necessary step, but not sufficient, as there are traditions, which are out of legislative regulation.
The deputy Alkhas Ghazaryan, highlighting the initiative, in her co-report spoke about health problems of girls because of early marriage, especially emphasized the awareness aimed at the change of attitude towards marriage in the communities.
The RA Deputy Minister of Justice Armenuhi Harutyunyan also highlighted the adoption of the package, noted that is the first step also to show the attitude of the state towards this phenomenon. “The state should express its attitude towards the circumstance that at least does not encourage the marriage of the child up to 18 years, but how they will build their relations, that is their expression of will as before 18 years, so after it,” the Deputy Minister noted.
The legislative package being under debate in the first reading was endorsed by the Committee.
