Iranian Caretaker Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan have called on Muslim states to employ all capacities to support Palestinians and stop the "crimes" by Israel in the Gaza Strip, according to a statement released by the Iranian Foreign Ministry on Sunday.
In a phone call, the two sides discussed the latest developments in Gaza, particularly in its southernmost Rafah city.
Bagheri Kani condemned Israel's "crimes against innocent civilians" in Gaza, denouncing its shutdown of land crossings into the strip and blocking of aid trucks destined for the war-torn enclave.
He called for greater cooperation among Muslim states to support the "oppressed people of Gaza," adding that Muslim states should not spare any opportunity to back Palestinians.
The Turkish foreign minister, for his part, urged greater coordination among Muslim states with regard to the issue of Palestine.
He hailed Iran's proposal for convening an extraordinary meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation as valuable, affirming that the continued consultations between Ankara and Tehran on the Gaza situation and other bilateral and regional issues were very "constructive."
Israel has launched a large-scale offensive against Hamas in Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, after Hamas carried out a surprise attack on southern Israel that killed about 1,200 people. Israeli troops have so far killed over 36,000 Palestinians and injured more than 81,000 others, according to the figures released by the Gaza health authorities.
