The fact that the world's attention is focused on the COP29 conference in Baku provides an excellent opportunity to sign a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, Elchin Amirbekov, Azerbaijani presidential envoy for special assignments, said in an interview with NE Global.
“Recently, an agreement was reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan on the mutual release of some detainees, as well as on the exchange of diplomatic support for each other,” he emphasized.
The presidential representative recalled that Armenia was the first to lift restrictions on Azerbaijan’s bid to host a climate conference. In response, Baku included Yerevan in the COP29 committee.
“Of course, this was a big breakthrough because for the first time through direct contacts we were able to achieve this confidence-building measure, it also showed that both countries are capable of resolving their differences through direct bilateral contacts without the participation of any third party,” he said .
Elchin Amirbekov said that work on a peace agreement between Baku and Yerevan continues: “We are cautiously optimistic and believe that it is possible to complete negotiations on this text before COP29. This would give a powerful signal to the outside world that one of the... long and tragic conflicts on the European continent, in the post-Soviet space, is coming to an end. Therefore, I believe that both countries and their people should be prepared for such a positive outcome.”
