The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion co-sponsored by members Kathryn Barger and Hilda Solis to declare April 24 this year as Armenian Genocide Memorial Day.
The governors of the Los Angeles County noted that the resilience of the Armenian nation, which has resumed its life, including in the Los Angeles County, is worthy of respect. They urged to always commemorate the Armenian Genocide and condemn hatred and atrocities wherever they are.
"I think it's important to think and learn from the past. This is also a tribute to those Armenians who, starting a new life here, made a great contribution to the development of not only the Los Angeles County, but also the entire country. As an official representing the largest Armenian community outside of Armenia, I think it is important to tell the Armenians: we hear you, we see you and we will not forget. We know what happened 109 years ago, and our government calls a spade a spade, which I'm grateful for. What happened 109 years ago was Genocide and an attempt to eliminate an entire people," said Kathryn Barger, member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
