Maria Zakharova, Representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, in her weekly briefing, commented on the issue of possible Western mediation in the settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict.
“Russia has globally demonstrated itself as a mediator in solving regional problems, showing a high level of efficiency, acting in favor of peace in the region based on the interests of all regional countries. It was not a conjunctural game. It was not a game for oneself and in favor of one's own interests. It was a real investment for the future of the region. It was an attempt to harmonize and find common approaches and reveal contradictions, again for the sake of those countries and the establishment of peace in the region in general. This is not just a philosophical concept, it became a reality, it was documented and started to be implemented.
But the West appeared, motivated by jealousy and a sense of infinite malice, as well as the desire to penetrate the region, it began to declare itself as a new ‘mediator’.
As for Armenia, every state has the right to implement its internal and external policy. The issue is that, unfortunately, we see how this is happening, it is not in favor of those declared goals, but simply contradicts them. It violates the balance of interests that exists in the region and is very important.”
