Why did it become necessary to deploy EU observers on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, because our contractual basis with Russia and the CSTO did not actually work, Russia and the CSTO did not actually fulfill their alliance obligations towards Armenia. Vahagn Aleksanyan, deputy of the ‘Civil Contract’ faction of the National Assembly, said this in a briefing with journalists, referring to the issue of the deployment of the EU mission on the border of Armenia.
“Going further, they decided to describe Armenia as a gray spot with unrecognized borders and extremely vulnerable. And there arose for us the need to form a new mechanism to ensure the security of Armenia and the security of the borders, and as one of those mechanisms, the option of inviting the European observers came up,” said Vahagn Aleksanyan, emphasizing that the European observers have done a great job in stabilizing the situation in general.
“And in the last few days, you have seen that false news was spread by Azerbaijan, allegedly about Armenia's accumulated troops in the direction of the border. We denied it. However, the international community received objective information about this process from the statement of European observers that there is no such thing. And the classic situation, which was very beneficial to Azerbaijan, that one side said and the other said, so they contradicted each other, here arose a third an impartial side, a reliable European Union observer mission for the international community, whose word carries great weight. This very active step, that the European observers are in Armenia, is extremely important in the direction of creating stability around Armenia,” he noted.
