Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant was attacked by Ukraine in a spate of unprecedented drone attacks, directly threatening the safety of the power plant and injuring three employees, Russia's RIA Novosti news agency cited Russia's State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom as saying on Sunday, Reuters reports.
Rosatom called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and European Union countries to respond to Ukraine's actions.
The power plant also released news that Ukrainian drones attacked its canteen area, damaging a truck that was unloading food, and another drone struck the nuclear power plant's cargo terminal.
There had been no response from the Ukrainian side.
On Sunday, the IAEA issued a statement confirming that the power plant was hit by drones.
It said the attack damaged the 6th power unit but did not pose a threat to its safety.
The IAEA also confirmed that its experts experienced an explosion during an inspection of the power plant on Sunday.
IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said in a statement that the IAEA urged all parties to avoid any action that contradicts the agency's principles or could compromise the security of the power plant.
"The radiation background at the station and the adjacent territory has not changed and is at a level corresponding to the normal operation of the power units, and does not exceed the natural background values," the power plant's press service said on Telegram.
The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and includes six power units with a total capacity of six gigawatts. At the end of February 2022, the facility was taken under Russian control.
