At least six civilians were killed and 10 others injured in Russia strike on Ukraine’s second-largest city, said regional authorities, on Saturday (Apr 6). This comes a day after Ukraine’s southern city of Zaporizhzhia was hit by Russian missiles that killed at least four people and wounded 20 others, said Ukrainian officials.
“As of this morning, there are 6 dead and 10 wounded as a result of the night strike on Shevchenkivskyi district,” said Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov, in a post on Telegram.
He also said that the attack hit residential areas and damaged nine high-rise buildings, three dormitories, a number of administrative buildings, a shop, a petrol station, a service station and cars.
The deadly strike was conducted using drones, said Ukraine’s national police. The attack took place just after midnight, reported the Ukrainian media.
Additionally, Kharkiv regional Governor Oleh Synehubov reported a strike on a residential building and a missile attack on a village north of Kharkiv city. However, no casualties were reported in either of the incidents.
Air raid alerts were sounded for Kharkiv and remained in effect for most of the country, including the capital Kyiv, several hours after the strike, according to Reuters.
At least four people were killed and 20 others injured after Russia launched five missiles on Zaporizhzhia on Friday (Apr 5), said the Ukrainian regional governor.
Two reporters who were covering the aftermath of the strikes were also wounded, reported Reuters.
The local prosecutor’s office said a nine-year-old boy was among those wounded, and four people were hospitalised in grave condition.
“What marks today’s strikes: first, there were two missile strikes, and then, about 40 minutes later, there were other strikes at the same place - just as rescuers, police started working,” said Governor of Zaporizhzhia, Ivan Fedorov, on national TV, as quoted by Reuters.
He also said that at least three apartment blocks, 10 private houses, shops and an unidentified industrial facility were damaged due to the attack.
Ukraine’s air force issued a ballistic missile raid alert for the region, a part of which is occupied by Russia, as per Reuters.
Ukraine on the other hand attacked the Morozovsk military air base in Russia’s Rostov region and destroyed six Russian warplanes, a Ukrainian intelligence source told Reuters on Friday (Apr 5).
The operation was jointly conducted by the Ukrainian military and the SBU security service, according to the news agency.
