Armenia and Azerbaijan are closer to peace than ever, Hikmet Hajiyev, head of the foreign policy department of the Azerbaijani President's Office, said in an interview with the Chinese Phoenix TV channel. He claimed that the last six months have been the calmest on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border.
According to Hajiyev, the OSCE Minsk Group has failed in establishing peace in the South Caucasus. "Now stability is within reach. There is de facto peace in place. The South Caucasus should turn into a cooperation region. We are making good progress on the peace treaty. However, Azerbaijan's approach is as follows: peace must be established by Baku and Yerevan, because this region belongs to us. "Peace is not in Washington, Brussels or Paris," Hajiyev added.
He expressed the opinion that despite the progress, there are certain political developments that have a negative impact on the regional cooperation and peace agenda.
