Member of the European Parliament, former Prime Minister of Lithuania Andrius Kubilius spoke at the session of the European Parliament on Armenia-EU relations.
“We see that Armenia, under the leadership of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, is showing a clear political will to reduce its security dependence on Russia. We also remember that last year on October 17, Mr. Pashinyan announced that Armenia wants to be as close to Europe as Europe deems possible.
We welcome Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's brave statement and steps that bring that country closer to the European Union.
The European Parliament should give a political answer, propose an ambitious agenda for the future of real relations with Armenia.
We want to see Armenia as part of the European family, which will enjoy the full benefits of integration.
The EU should develop a step-by-step broad map to prepare Armenia for EU rapprochement, including its candidate status.
On the other hand, it is obvious that Russia will react angrily to such brave behavior of Armenia, and it will become a security and economic challenge for Armenia.
Armenia needs guarantees from the European Union and Western democracy, and the European Union must accept the economic challenges created by Russia for Armenia.
Armenia's European perspective is the only way to establish stability. It will be beneficial for Azerbaijan as well,” said the MEP.
