Western countries are trying to create cracks in the relations between Yerevan and Moscow, Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergey Kopyrkin stated in an interview with Radio Sputnik.
"It is known that the leadership of Armenia has now put into question the security formula that has worked until now, and has started diversifying that sector. All this could not but affect the atmosphere of our relations. I must say directly that our relations are now undergoing a kind of strength test," Kopyrkin stated, adding that Moscow has not changed its approach to Yerevan, and Armenia is considered an allied state.
The diplomat expressed the opinion that the ties between Russia and Armenia remain strong, and relations have continued to develop in almost all areas. According to Kopyrkin, however, there is one factor that cannot help but worry.
"Recently, a geopolitical confrontation has been brought to the region. Unfortunately, this is happening now, and certainly not at the initiative of the Russian Federation," the ambassador said. He noted that Western countries want to weaken Russia's role in the region, trying to push it out.
"American official circles place the relations with Armenia directly in the context of the struggle against Russia and Iran. All this causes serious concern and worry. We hope that the Armenian leadership also understands all the risks. I hope that with joint efforts we will manage to ensure the stability of our relations," concluded the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Armenia.
