Russia is seeking a peaceful South Caucasus, Sergey Lebedev, Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), told NEWS.ru on Wednesday.
He claims the issue is discussed at meetings of all levels to understand what measures should be taken to achieve complete peace in the region.
"The Russian Federation is strongly interested in restoring peace in the South Caucasus... We are happy that both sides are now moving in this direction. The statements of the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders indicate their intention to achieve complete peace," Lebedev stated.
The CIS head noted that the efforts to reduce tensions and restore peace in the South Caucasus are fully supported by all members of the organization. However, it requires the approval of Baku and Yerevan.
"The state of war is an unnatural state. The natural state is the state of peace, good-neighborly relations and cooperation. It is necessary to return this natural state to the South Caucasus… We sincerely hope that the recent statements about the intention to establish complete peace and the possible signing of a peace treaty in the near future will be a success," Lebedev added.
