The ruling Georgian Dream party officially nominated Irakli Kobakhidze as the candidate for the position of Prime Minister, Georgian Public TV reports.
Irakli Garibashvili, the new GD chair, announced at the party congress that Irakli Kobakhidze would be the GD’s candidate for the Prime Minister position, expressing his wishes for his success.
A symbolic vote was conducted at the congress to express support for Irakli Kobakhidze.
In his speech, Irakli Kobakhidze thanked the founder and honorary chairperson of the party, Bidzina Ivanishvili, for appointing him to the position.
“I express my gratitude to the founder and honorary chair of the party, Bidzina Ivanishvili, for appointing me to the position of Prime Minister and for placing confidence in me,” said Irakli Kobakhidze.
The decision was discussed during a session of the GD Political Council before the party congress.
In the upcoming session week, the Members of Parliament will approve the new Prime Minister and the composition of the government.
Irakli Garibashvili resigned from the Prime Minister’s post on January 29.
